ARTISTIC POROSITY
RED HOOK I BROOKLYN -  Partner with Yanchen Yu
With the increasing of real-estate in New York City, it has become difficult for artists to afford the rent in Manhattan. Therefore, they started to move to other districts like Bushiwick and Redhook, which are much cheaper and disconnected from the city. However, gentrification has started in these areas as well. The design is an experiment to build a new kind of community for the artists to survive in such gentrification.
A mapping of artists’ working space and exhibition space in Brooklyn, to show the density of such space and issue the importance of solving the problem of gentrification taking place at the area.
In response to gentrification, the strategy is to reduce the distance between artists and potential selling space, as well as encouraging the public to participate in their artwork. It is a convergence of artists and the public, of art work, commercial, and living, and of the important form of existing exhibition space.

Typical Plan This image shows a series of floor plans through the unwrapped ramp. Galleries and other public open areas are most adjacent to the ramp, while production space has the second hierarchy and living space remains independent from public space.
The continuous “ramp“ void is the most public space for visitor. It connects all the artists’working space from bottom to the top.
